The bar is currently purely textual:

<< First, < Previous, Next >, Latest >>

I find this difficult to find, parse and click on.

Could this be turned into button-like widgets (without JS of course) which are more visible, clearer to read and easier to click on?

Yes, these links have been nagging me and have been looking at ways to make them nicer and more accessible.

I like a button like, or nav bar like approach.

I updated the first and last icons to make them more distinctive and hopefully the first icon looks less like a K at first glance. The icons now follow the color scheme of the link.
