A podcast series where I document my journey of using Linux so that you drive up.
So I still haven't needed to go back to Windows recently. I had to join a single.
When I looked in a software's end of the experiment, there was no CMotch in Twinstall.
No problem, I just went to the same website, downloaded the dev package, clicked on it,
and it installed perfectly, connected to the meeting with no problems at all.
I'm still really happy with this experiment. I like that so far.
Every time I have a problem, it's already been answered and it's been formed.
I was looking forward to the beta version of the next experiment, which is 22.3,
which is coming back at the end of the December.
Can we mention that I was brave starting on that laptop and should have started with a desktop?
The thing is, I don't actually have a desktop. I main desktop for work has two monitors
clicked to a docking station. At the end of the day, I'm probably worked at that top,
like in my thing, and I plug in this sync pad, and it works like a treat.
I've been deep diving into monitoring the uses of my laptop,
especially memory usage and practical usage. One thing I was looking was trying to do is to pick
an idea of that laptop that would last me next couple of years. As I mentioned before, the
sync pad T14S has built in memory, that is solid on. So you can't replace it.
My laptop has a six-sinking around, and I was wondering if I needed to look at it,
and that to with more memory, the T14S comes with more memory, can come with more memory,
but the very rarely on eBay. The L3 does come with two sorts of supporting DDR, or DDR5, depending
on the model. But looking at the current RAM prices, did AI requirements and data trends.
How does the recording in December 26, RAM prices have gone through the roof?
So I started, okay, the X and I sat with the monitoring solution. I'm not very good at saying this
name, it's Perifius. So I serve a Docker container for one of the servers using Perifius,
which is a time-see monitoring tool. This Docker container was set up and scraped the
host to get matrix. On my laptop, I installed the no-lix water, which exposed metrics like RAM,
use, and battery, battery performances. And then the service scraped these data every few
minutes and stores them in a database. And you can use a cool tool like Grafana, which draws nice
graphs, using a data clicked by the Perifius. Again, you can install a disbar Docker
and run it in the container. You then point Grafana to Perifius again, and then you can see
the nice graphs. I will clear the link in the show notes for the graphs and diagrams I'm using,
or the dashboard I'm using. As I'm running tail scales on my devices, this is a message
VPN network, meaning that all the devices with tail scan and scores, even if I'm a separate
network, different IP address range, can speak to each other using host name until DNS. It means
I don't have to open up ports on my phone. So whenever my laptop has internet tests, it can be queries.
I can see that my daily users are back for gigabytes, and when I record a podcast, it spikes
up to between 8 and 12 because of the using audacity and telegram. So I don't think I need to
worry about getting more RAM at the moment. I probably would, if the current prices weren't so high,
and so I need to go find a you can pick free defined dashboards, and then where you can see
things like RAM and disc usage. I also have one that shows battery metrics like photoshoot
numbers, the cycles, the percentages. I'll leave the link again in the show notes to the dashboards.
I've been looking at a way to say battery power in the next, giving more me to a package
called TLP, with optimization system when I'm battery, like turning things off when I not need
also with the firm on live on batteries to make them last on you shouldn't charge them all
way to 100% as this makes more sure, more energy to fill, the last dream is an anchor destroyer
battery life. So tools like TPL set of values, so when they stop battery charging, I have set
mine to 9% to test. All the monitoring I have done on a battery didn't quite satisfy well
and intended to do, like when you put the mouse over the battery icon it showed you had four
hours left, but when I went to actually know how many hours I actually got, per charge, like a stop
port. So I wrote a script with the Helicopite which worked pretty well, it puts our put link in the
show notes. It's basically a basket that rent every minute and write details to a log file,
and then checks as a laptop is on battery or plugged in. When it detects it is unplugged, it
records the time, records the time has happened and starts the timer, it records battery percentage
and then when it detects the next time it plugged in it will work out, how long it's battery, it's
being on battery. Next problem I wanted to solve was, what happens when it goes to sleep, I had
the function show that it has it if the script text at last time ran was great then two minutes,
it notes laptop has been asleep, it then subtracts the sleep time from the battery runtime.
However, observation suggests that TPL might actually be causing words about life and having it
installed, I've removed TPL because I was only getting about three hours compared to six
eight hours glad it, but I still need to wait to find to limit the battery charge to 90%.
You can use U-Path to this, you have to edit a file, but I couldn't do this for a reach,
which is very odd, didn't have the permission, even though if you looked at the permissions on
the file, you should have. You had to do an echo, a lot of the echo 90 piping it to the T-command,
which seemed to sound as you just set the value. I also came across a problem called caffeine when I was
testing, which in an application that stopped your laptop going to sleep. I wanted to test how long
my laptop would run the battery without power settings interfering. Now I think I came across when
my testing with a local send, which is a great way to send Trant for a file between devices.
It's like airdrop from Apple. I had to find this my phone and wanted to
transfer to my laptop. The local send was easy to install on a laptop for the software sender,
and both my iPhone and Android apps have the nearest headset tentative app store.
You just set, start the app on both devices, on the laptop I left it to receive mode and then
displayed a couple of random words, and on my phone you select what you want to send and
click send, it's cant network for devices. You select where you want to send it to, and you
confirm the random words match. You can save devices as favourites so you don't have to deal with
them in the future. I also used it to send far between Linux laptops. It worked quite well.
I wanted to skip out a shout to Teamux. I heard of it before, but I thought it was
complicated to set up. Actually, it's surprising easy. Here's a problem, it solves.
If you SSH into a remote machine, say you want to train in the connection, keep stopping.
When you get to scan any command running on the remote server, get killed. That's really frustrating.
With Teamux, you just SSH into the box, run the command, Teamux, and you get
connected to a virtual terminal session. The beauty is, you just connect from that session,
it keeps running in the background. When you reconnect for SSH, you
can type T-Max LS to list your sessions. Mine, this is one called zero.
Which shows you where the sessions are open. You can then run T-Max I-F and T-Zero,
and it reconnects to the terminal zero. You're right back where you left off. So,
and so cool, and there's no extra setup on the S-H side, it just works.
The last thing I want to power cover is the way back up, so track the T.
I'm trying to keep in mind that everything on my laptop, I shouldn't,
but I should be happy to lose. If I'm working on things like photos or something,
I don't want to lose, I'll make sure I have a copy of them somewhere else.
Anything I'm working on like well-exiled documents is stored in the cloud,
and then it says we'll buy our web browser, and these are backed up from TeclerBuy,
never workflow. As I'm going to go for, I've used time shift to backup the OS files in the
route partition to separate volume. However, these don't back up my home directory. For this,
I've chosen a U-D-U-B-D-U-B. Backing up to my one drive one today. This is quite easy to set up
for the software centers. Part of this is an installation U-Q to the encryption password.
Thanks to your one drive you can take to remote share or Google Drive,
but I've got one terabyte for my one drive, I've just backed up to there.
And then to the fill backup, then takes it, I told it to an exclusive thing like my
download folder, VM files, because I've got a couple of virtual machines that are running
home on your backup and cash files, and after good cut browse, it backed up successfully.
I tested the restore process by doing a fresh install of the X-Men.
A son, D-G, began on this machine, taken into my one drive, and I entered my
decryption password, and now I was able to restore my files.
The other thing I had about the other day was think of the Fox clone, which is like
cloned to there, but it's got a GUI, which is a beautiful eye, so it means that you can use
to take backups of entire void or a drive. This gives you a full image backup of your system.
Doing something like a big upgrade, I might use this, but I might do not have a podcast on this
