Hello, this is Ahuka. Welcome you to Hacker Public Radio and another exciting episode. And this is coming to you from the Reserve Q. You know what that means. There aren't enough shows being submitted.
Hacker Public Radio is a community project that relies on shows being recorded and submitted by members of the community. And it can only continue to exist as long as that happens.
So, you know, when shows are down, and that's been happening more lately, you know, that's a sign that maybe the community doesn't really want to do this anymore.
Now, if you would like Hacker Public Radio to continue, you need to record some shows and submit them.
So, enough of the public service announcement. I'm continuing with my discussion of the YouTube,
channels that I'm going to do this.
And the next one I'm going to go to is Professor of Rock.
These are generally 20 to 30 minute long videos.
And they come out every day.
Now, that doesn't mean I necessarily listen to or watch each one of these.
But, you know, frequently he's telling a story about something that happened in rock history.
You know, like, one of them was,
Catchy Hit was so happy it irritated the hell out of the band whenever they played it.
Well, okay.
Is that something you want to hear more about?
Rebuked his cheating wife in 1981's song.
It became a classic.
What the hell does this song mean?
Song was so popular MTV quit playing it to give other bands a chance.
Now, a lot of what he does in this is just his own analysis.
But, frequently, he will interview some of the people involved.
And so, he's interviewed a whole lot of musicians.
Primarily musicians.
Sometimes writers and other things.
So, if you're interested in that sort of thing.
If you like knowing about music.
Good.
The next one is Prog Axia.
Now, this is also a music channel.
Devoted, really, just to progressive rock.
And things like that.
So, it's going to be talking about Yes.
And, gentle giant.
King Crimson.
All of those kinds of things.
I happen to love progressive rock.
So, this is a channel that I enjoy subscribing to.
And I enjoy the videos.
Then, there's Quill 18.
This is another one of those channels that is someone who is a gamer.
And does a lot of Civ stuff.
Does other things.
So, in addition to Civ.
You know, he's done things like Disco Elysium.
Path of Exile 2.
Stellaris.
He's been doing a lot of Stellaris lately.
So, then there's Rachel Flowers' music.
Now, Rachel Flowers is a blind musician.
Very good musician.
It's not unusual for a blind person to be a really good musician.
Because, generally, what happens is they are more focused on what they can hear, since they can't see anything.
And, that tends to make them really good musicians.
And, so, she has a channel.
And, you can subscribe to it and listen to the music.
I think she's done a lot with things like Emerson Lake and Palmer and those kinds of things.
She did one video on Little Arabella, which is a song by The Nice.
Now, if you don't know about your history in these things, The Nice is the band that Keith Emerson was in before he formed Emerson Lake and Palmer.
And, so, obviously, she knows that history.
And, then there was a video that she did playing with Dweezil Zappa on one of Zappa's songs.
One of Frank Zappa's songs.
So, I like her stuff.
Then, there is Radio Free Scarro.
Now, Radio Free Scarro is a YouTube channel.
It's also a podcast.
And, the podcast is really just the audio from the YouTube channel.
Now, sometimes they will actually be on camera.
It's three people from Canada who are Doctor Who fans.
And, so, they will do a weekly program.
Generally, an hour or so long.
Sometimes longer.
And, it might be a review.
If there's been a recent episode of Doctor Who for them to review, they'll do that.
Otherwise, they might talk about a topic of some kind.
For instance, one of the older Doctor Who shows, a Patrick Troughton thing called The War Games.
They recently put out a new version that has been edited down to not last as long, but also colorized.
Because, those was done in the days when it was all black and white.
And, so, they did an hour-long program reviewing that.
And, next is the Ralph Towner's channel.
Now, Ralph Towner is a really excellent guitar player, among other things.
Also plays piano.
He's pretty good with that, too.
And, he was in a band called the Paul Winter Consort, going back decades ago.
Then, with three other gentlemen, who were also in the Paul Winter Consort,
they split out and created a group called Oregon,
which was their own and one of my favorite groups.
And, then, Ralph Towner has been doing solo work and recording with other musicians.
For instance, he did an album recently, you know, with Eddie Gomez and Jack Dejeanette.
And, he's recorded with, you know, a number of jazz musicians, you know,
that you would probably recognize.
Andy Middleton, Dave Holland, stuff like that.
And, so, he's got two channels.
One is sort of, you know, about what's going on in his life.
And, the other is the music channel.
And, that puts out videos that were taken of him performing in various places and times.
So, those are usually just little clips.
So, they might range anywhere from five minutes to 15 minutes, depending on how long a piece it is.
The next one is Randy Rainbow.
This is a comedy channel.
And, Randy is pretty outrageous.
I think flamboyantly gay would not be a false description.
And, he does these musical videos.
He does these songs that poke fun at people.
I like it.
Now, the next one is a channel called Real Fast Spanish.
And, this is another one of those channels that helps me with my Spanish.
And, videos are not terribly long.
Generally speaking, you know, 8 to 10 minutes.
Sometimes, as high as 15.
And, it's on a particular topic of some kind.
Like, K versus Qual.
When to use each of those.
They're similar, but they're not identical.
So, knowing when to know which can help.
How to think in Spanish and stop translating in your head.
Este versus esta versus esto.
What is the best translation in each case.
Tener versus haber.
Three ways to use to have verbs in Spanish.
So, you know, if you want to learn Spanish, there might be one to pick up.
Now, the next one is real-time history.
I first found out about these guys when they did, basically, a series on World War I.
And, what happened was, they looked at the calendar and realized, okay, the 100th anniversary is coming up.
So, when I say coming up, they started working on this stuff back in the years prior to 2014.
World War I started in 2014.
But, they started producing ahead of time to get ready.
And, the idea was that what they would do is, they would each week produce, they would each week air a video that covered that specific week in the history of World War I.
So, you know, in August of 1914, as armies were mobilizing.
Well, in the video for that same week in 2014, they would present it like a newscast of, well, here's what's going on.
And, it was really good.
And, what happened was, they finished World War I.
And, then, the group sort of split into two.
Real-time history is one of the offshoots.
And, the other one is Time Ghost.
And, I'm subscribed to both of them.
And, they're both fantastic.
So, real-time history, once they finished that, they started looking at some other things, like the Vietnam War, the Franco-Prussian War, stuff like that.
As well as, just individual videos about a particular topic, like, in World War II, the Battle of the Atlantic.
Or, how the U.S. turned Iran into a dictatorship.
So, very interesting.
They did a long one on Napoleon's invasion of Russia.
Well, the next channel I want to talk about is called Real Life Lore.
And, this is, these videos are generally more than a half hour, but less than an hour.
So, in the 40, 40 to 50 minute range.
And, just takes a particular topic and gives this person's slant on it.
So, why did NATO expand?
And, in the subtitle, what Russia doesn't want you to know about your history.
Another one, why Afghanistan is headed to war with all its neighbors.
Now, occasionally, this channel puts out a short video.
But, those were generally older ones.
They seem to be doing the long form ones now.
Why this part of Africa is erased on every map you see.
And, it's talking about the Western Sahara.
And, it's basically because it's in dispute about who actually controls that and owns it.
So, that's an interesting channel for me.
Next one is Rich Hudson.
And, this is another Doctor Who channel.
Rich was originally on the What Culture Network doing Who Culture.
And, then left and now has his own channel.
Doing much the same thing.
Talking about episodes of Doctor Who.
And, reviewing or analyzing them in various ways.
Then, there's Richie Castellano.
He's a musician.
And, he plays guitar for Blue Oyster Cult.
And, has done some other things as well.
He did some things with the band Geeks.
And, they've done some covers of Yes.
Or, of Bohemian Rhapsody.
So, it's fun.
It's a music channel.
Another music channel.
Rick Beato.
Rick does analysis.
He's had a series on, you know, what are the Spotify, you know, top ten songs on Spotify.
And, he'll play each one of them and comment about whether he thinks they're good or not.
He has been a record producer.
He is a musician himself.
He has a lot of knowledge about music.
And, also, he set up a second channel called Rick Beato 2.
And, that has focused more on interviews with musicians.
So, Steely Dan, in their own words.
An interview with Warren Haynes.
An interview with Rick Rubin about producing Johnny Cash's masterpiece.
He's interviewed all of the members of the police, individually.
So, Andy Summers, Sting, Stuart Copeland.
He's interviewed all of them.
And, so on.
So, and it's very interesting.
He's interviewed a number of jazz musicians.
Like Ron Carter, who is a great jazz bassist.
Or, Brad Meldow, a pianist.
And, because he knows their music, he can start talking technically about what's going on.
You know, to the point of sometimes, you know, talking about the chord changes that they used.
And, I like that kind of music geek.
So, that's Rick Beato.
And, that sounds like enough for another episode.
