Hello, Hacker Public Radio, this is Claudio Miranda,

and I'm recording this episode for HPR to see if Haiku can mumble.
|
||||
Now, the reason I'm recording this episode is because
|
||||
during the Hacker Public Radio New Year's Eve show last year, 2024,
|
||||
I was wondering if Haiku actually was able to run mumble
|
||||
in order to be able to connect for the HPR show or to record HPR episodes
|
||||
or even to just the chat.
|
||||
And I said I was going to check it out this year,
|
||||
and it's taken me up until now to record this episode,
|
||||
so we're going to be testing this.
|
||||
So I'm sure you're wondering, or not, but I'm going to say it anyway.
|
||||
What is Haiku?
|
||||
Aside from a 575 poem, it is an operating system.
|
||||
It's actually the open source successor to the B operating system
|
||||
from B incorporated, or it's been shortened as BOS.
|
||||
It was an operating system that came out in the 90s, early to mid-90s,
|
||||
and was way ahead of its time with preemptive multitasking
|
||||
compared to Microsoft Windows or macOS at the time,
|
||||
which only used cooperative multitasking.
|
||||
And it almost became the operating system for Macintoshes
|
||||
when Apple was known as a beleaguered company
|
||||
until Steve Jobs made an offer to Apple
|
||||
with his next operating system.
|
||||
And they ended up purchasing it for much less
|
||||
than what B was selling it for.
|
||||
And they got Steve Jobs in the package
|
||||
as interim CEO and then CEO.
|
||||
And the rest is history.
|
||||
That eventually became macOS 10 and today's macOS.
|
||||
As for B-Inc, B-Inc not having been able to sell to Apple,
|
||||
tried various other ways to bring BOS to the market,
|
||||
but it was unsuccessful thanks to a lot of what Microsoft
|
||||
was doing at the time and with their OEM partners.
|
||||
But anyway, all of that I'm sure you can find.
|
||||
I'm going to put it on the show notes

Now I've also included the homepage for Mumble
|

so that you can be familiar with it in case you're not.

Anyway, so once B-Inc ceased to be
|
||||
and the B operating system was sold to other companies,
|
||||
some developers wanted to kind of bring it back
|
||||
as an open source project,
|
||||
taking what was already open source
|
||||
and trying to build off of that
|
||||
to recreate an open source version of what was BOS.
|
||||
And it originally became known as OpenBOS,
|
||||
but then it changed a few names.
|
||||
And eventually, as the project started to come together
|
||||
and really take off, it was called Haiku.
|
||||
It's been around for a good while
|
||||
and the latest version is R1 Beta 5,
|
||||
which you can download from the website in the show notes.
|
||||
But I am using a nightly snapshot.
|
||||
So this one I have been using
|
||||
and I updated it to the latest snapshot
|
||||
for December 19th, 2025.
|
||||
And that is hrev59233.
|
||||
So I'm going to go ahead and install Mumble.
|
||||
First, I'm going to check in Haiku Depot,
|
||||
which is the graphical software package manager for Haiku.
|
||||
Let's see if I can find it.
|
||||
Haiku Depot, there it is.
|
||||
Now, you'll find a number of apps here
|
||||
that have been ported over since.
|
||||
The project is quite old at this point.
|
||||
I guess you can say it's around 20 years old at this point.
|
||||
So I would say it's pretty mature,
|
||||
even though it is still in beta form.
|
||||
Quite usable.
|
||||
It's a single-user operating system.
|
||||
So that's the way it was designed.
|
||||
They wanted to keep that as the...
|
||||
They wanted to keep that...

The Haiku developers wanted to keep that
|
||||
as one of the features of the operating system,
|
||||
even though it's...
|
||||
They wanted to keep it more as a personal operating system,
|
||||
as opposed to having it be multi-user.
|
||||
So anyway, back to Haiku Depot.
|
||||
Searching for Mumble.
|
||||
And there it is on the list.
|
||||
I already have it installed.
|
||||
The version in here is 1.5.634-1.
|
||||
So that's already installed.
|
||||
And I'm going to set it up right now.
|
||||
Oh, one other thing that I wanted to say
|
||||
is that there's also a command line package...
|
||||
PackageManager command called pkgman
|
||||
that works very much like apt on Linux,
|
||||
on Debian-based systems.
|
||||
So if you do a packageman-h,
|
||||
it should give you all the commands.
|
||||
But there's both ways to do it.
|
||||
So let's go ahead and launch Mumble.
|
||||
I already have it installed, as I said.
|
||||
All right, Mumble here.
|
||||
Now, initially, what it will...
|
||||
It may go through the...
|
||||
Because I've already sort of set this up
|
||||
on this installation of Haiku.
|
||||
You may get the audio wizard.
|
||||
Now, one of the things...
|
||||
Because I like to use push-to-talk.
|
||||
And I recommend that everybody does as well.
|
||||
And I think for the HPR New Year's Eve show,
|
||||
this is required.
|
||||
You can go through that.
|
||||
But the problem is that
|
||||
when you get to the part of push-to-talk,
|
||||
when you want to add the keys to use
|
||||
to trigger push-to-talk,
|
||||
it doesn't really work.
|
||||
So what I'm going to do first,
|
||||
I'm going to connect here
|
||||
to the Mumble server,
|
||||
which for the HPR,
|
||||
which is chatter.skyhaven.net.
|
||||
Okay.
|
||||
I'm going to add new
|
||||
when I want to connect to the server.
|
||||
And then I will put that there.
|
||||
The port is 64738.
|
||||

And then select connect.

Once I have that set,
|
||||
I'm going to select
|
||||
chatter.skyhaven.net.
|
||||
Connect.

And I should be connected.

So I'm going to set up push-to-talk.
|
||||
I'm going to go to configure.
|
||||
Settings.
|
||||
And I'm going to go to audio input.
|
||||
And where it says transmission,
|
||||
I'm going to set it to push-to-talk.
|
||||
And then when I scroll down,
|
||||
because for whatever reason
|
||||
this has the audio cue,
|
||||
I disable that for push-to-talk
|
||||
because it's very annoying.
|
||||
So once you have that set,
|
||||
say okay.
|
||||
Oh, one other thing that I set also
|
||||
because you can't configure the keys.
|
||||
There is, under transmission,
|
||||
there is a box to check
|
||||
that says display push-to-talk window.
|
||||
It basically opens a little window
|
||||
where you push it
|
||||
and it activates push-to-talk.
|
||||
So I have that somewhere
|
||||
in the window here.
|
||||
Sounds.
|
||||
So I'm going to move my user,
|
||||
my username,
|
||||
over to the audio test section
|
||||
so that I get the repeater.
|
||||
Okay, it's all set up.
|
||||
I have the mimic-claudio-m user there now.
|
||||
And I'm going to test it out.
|
||||
And you should be able to hear it.
|
||||

Takes a little longer.

And there you go.

So push-to-talk is working on this.
|

Mumble is working.
|
||||
I can actually set up a Haiku machine
|

and with Mumble

||||
to connect to the HPR
|
||||
Mumble server

||||
so that I can chit-chat with everybody
|
||||
when the HPR New Year's Eve 2025 show kicks in.
|
||||
