Hello, this is Ahuka, welcoming you to Hacker Public Radio and another exciting episode. And this one is coming to you from the Reserve Q. So you know what that means. It means there aren't enough shows.
Hacker Public Radio is a community project that relies on members of the community to record and submit shows if it's going to continue.
If at some point the shows are just not coming, we close the whole thing up and that's the end of it. I don't want that to happen.
I'm assuming if you're listening to this that you don't want it to happen.
But the only way to make sure that it doesn't happen is to record and submit shows.
So, with that, I'm going to continue what I have been doing for the Reserve Q this go-round.
And in January of 2025, I sat down with all of the YouTube channels that I subscribe to and I've been going through and talking about them.
And I'm going to do more of that.
So, the first channel I'm going to talk about is called The Bulwark.
And it's another one of those political and news-related channels.
It's kind of interesting.
It says their mission is to provide analysis and reporting in the defense of America's liberal democracy.
That's it. That's the mission.
This is interesting because a lot of the people involved in this are Republicans, which in the United States would be the conservative right-wing party.
But there's a difference between being conservative and being far-right.
And they're not far-right.
They see the far-right as a big danger.
And so, they are doing what they can to prevent that from happening.
So far, we haven't been terribly successful.
But, you know, what can you do?
The next channel is The Fab Foe.
Now, this is a group of musicians.
Many of them are fairly well-known as studio musicians.
The bass player, Will Lee, was in David Letterman's band when Letterman had his show on television.
And basically, this group of people, they're huge Beatles fans.
And they go around and do concerts.
Typically, what they'll do is they'll do an entire Beatles album from start to finish.
Even the ones that you would think, how are they going to do that?
Like they did the White Album and they were able to cover Revolution No. 9.
They travel with a horn section and a few strings players.
So, they were able to replicate to a reasonably good degree what the Beatles did.
It's interesting because the Beatles stopped touring because they didn't think they could do on tour what they did in the studio.
To some degree, I think the Fab Foe disproved that because they're able to do it.
But, anyway, it's a fun little channel.
They don't put out a whole lot of videos.
And I think their touring thing slowed down a lot when the COVID pandemic hit.
But, I enjoy them.
So, they're on my list.
Next one is called The Great War.
Now, we talked about this before.
This was the real-time look at World War I.
And this was the group that, in 2014, started doing weekly videos covering the corresponding week in 1914.
And continued up through 15, 16, 17, 18.
So, it was a really in-depth coverage of World War I.
And then, they split into two other groups.
One we'll get to is Time Ghost.
And one we've already looked at is Real Time History.
So, there's not a whole lot new coming out.
But, they do still put out new videos from time to time.
The last one was about two months ago on the major battles of World War I in 1916.
Okay, the next channel is something called The History Guy, who is a fellow who is into history.
And, his tagline is that, you know, history deserves to be remembered.
And, so, he'll post, you know, new things, generally three days a week.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
And, he'll take something like, let's see, Benedict Arnold's Raid on Richmond from the American Revolution.
The Stand at Elson Bourne Ridge from World War II.
Mutiny of the Pennsylvania Line.
That was another Revolutionary War.
So, just anything that he thinks, you know.
And, I think the thing is, he'll look for the stuff that happened in history, but is not well known.
And, so, he'll do something on that and say, you know, this really deserves to be remembered.
And, most of his videos, I would say, are about 15 minutes.
So, that's a decent time.
Then, there is The Immediate Family.
Now, The Immediate Family is a group of musicians who are famous for their studio work.
They, you know, they've worked with a ton of people.
So, we're talking about people like Leland Sklar, who played bass with, I think, half the groups out there, probably.
And, Russ Kunkel.
So, they're well known within the music community.
They're not necessarily well known to casual music fans.
But, they're really good.
And, so, they're putting out their own music now.
Well, and, I have gotten some of it.
The next one is The Korean War.
Now, this is from TimeGhost.
That one of the groups that came out of that Great War thing.
They did World War II.
And, then, after wrapping that up, said, well, you know, maybe we should do the Korean War.
The setup is the same, okay?
So, what is happening is, right now, they're going through, they went through 1950.
And, it's like, okay, if we're in the first week of January right now, then, you know, what happened in the first week?
So, like, they just released, as I'm recording this, the Third Battle of Seoul, which was January 7th of 1951.
So, and, I'm recording this in January of 2025.
So, you know, it's just going to go through the whole war week by week following what's going on.
Interesting approach.
Then, there's a channel called The Language Tutor Spanish.
The Language Tutor has several channels.
It's a fellow named Danny Evans.
He's a teacher and teaches languages.
He has a doctorate.
And, he does podcasts or videos, what have you.
I mean, you can get them as podcasts.
You can get them as videos.
And, they're topic-oriented.
So, something like, lo or le in Spanish.
Learn the difference in five minutes.
Or, your regular verbs in the subjunctive.
And, that's a nine-minute video.
So, each video is really a topic-oriented kind of thing.
But, if you follow them all, you would certainly get a lot of education in the language.
Now, he also does one in French.
And, an interesting reversal.
He's got a channel he started up on English for Spanish speakers.
I'm an English speaker who's learning Spanish, but it can go the other way.
Now, the next channel I want to talk about is the Lincoln Project.
Lincoln Project.
Lincoln was the first Republican president of the United States.
He was the president during the Civil War.
In fact, you could make, I think, a pretty good argument that it was the election of Lincoln that caused the southern states to embark upon secession and war.
So, they're naming themselves after Lincoln because, again, these, again, are people who were traditional Republicans.
You know, many of them worked for Republican presidents.
And, they just don't like the direction that the country's going in with Donald Trump.
And, so, they're trying to do something to stop that.
The next channel is the Planetary Society.
And, that is the world's largest non-profit space interest group.
That's what they bill themselves as.
And, I'm a member of the Planetary Society.
And, that means I pay a membership dues.
Because, I'm a big space geek.
So, a lot of their videos are rather long.
I tend to skip over some of those.
But, the shorter ones I'm okay with.
Now, the next channel is called the Saxxy Gamer.
The Saxxy.
S-A-X-Y.
And, it has pictures of saxophones and stuff like that.
Now, he's a gamer.
And, does a number of things.
But, mostly Civ.
Which is my interest.
So, I watch his videos on Civilization.
And, you know, he's got some stuff up there about Civ-7 already.
But, he's been doing all of them going on.
He had a whole series on Civilization VI tips.
And, those were, you know, average maybe 10-minute videos.
Then, there's a channel called The Ship Life.
This is about cruising.
And, so, there's a fellow who was a crew member on cruise ships.
And, then got into being a travel agent and a YouTube vlogger, as the term is.
So, that's, you know, a few times a week.
Commentary, news, what's going on in the world of cruising.
Typically, eight or nine minutes long.
Then, there's the spiffing Brit.
Who is, he's got an act of being outrageously British.
And, it's very over the top.
I have no idea what his nationality actually is.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to discover that it has nothing to do with
Britain.
But, he does say his location is the UK.
So, whatever.
Now, he's a gamer.
He does sometimes do something about Civ.
But, he actually does all kinds of videos.
And, they're interesting because what he does is he finds ways,
to basically break the system, you know.
Go into a game and say, all right, if you do this, it's not what they intended to do.
But, look what happens when you do it.
And, you can basically get a gigantic victory out of it.
Okay, next one is The Vintage Space with Amy Shearer Title.
And, her whole thing is, it's space, but she really focuses on the earlier years.
So, there's a lot of stuff about the 60s, you know, Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.
And, that's really her strongest focus.
Videos, most of them are relatively short.
You know, occasionally, she'll do a longer one.
But, the majority of them are probably, you know, 15 minutes or so in length.
And, the next one is called The Friel Sisters.
F-R-I-E-L.
I hope I'm pronouncing that right.
They are Irish musicians.
And, as I've mentioned before, I really love traditional Irish music.
And, that's kind of what they do.
So, it's a nice channel.
They put out videos.
Typically, you know, their typical video might be them doing a song.
So, you know, four or five minutes is probably enough.
So, I think that's enough for now.
