hi everybody my name is ken fallon you're listening to another episode of hacker public
radio today a little episode because i'm posting a show to fill a free slot otherwise you would
have three a hookah shows one after the other so as some of you might be aware i live in the
netherlands and here they speak dutch as well as english but occasionally i come across dutch
articles that i want to translate or i don't know a word or something so rather than using
online tools i've never felt super comfortable with that i have some translation tools that i use
on my phone and on my desktop so on my desktop i use a tool called local translate which is from their
description on flat hub it is local translate is an offline translation application that uses
firefox's neural transmission models from mozilla firefox transition models project
to perform high quality translations locally on your device it's not affiliated in mozilla in any way
it says when you open it you get a very very simple window doesn't have anything really anything in it
you select the language that you want to translate from and it gives in the text up there enter the
text to translate so you there's even a paste button in there so you can just press paste and then
translate and then underneath the language that you selected appears and we've got bulgarian bosnian
dutch estonian greek hindi japanese loads of languages and the translation appears there and then at the bottom
once it's translated you can press the copy button and it's genuinely that simple um it's all local if
you want to switch from one to the other so now i have a piece of text i'm maybe replying to an email
and i just want to get the wording right so i'll write it in english and then try and press the up down
button or swap button which will just swap nothing in it that gets in your way it's just simple it works
it's fantastic little app then i was thinking on my phone i have the need to have something similar
and i wanted to see was there anything available on the fdroid app store for my android phone
and there is and it is called offline translator or just translator in the fdroid store links to
everything here will be in the show notes um and the description says it is a translator app that
performs on-device translations of text and images without sending your data to external servers
it uses the same mozilla translation models it does translation of non-latin script it does optical
character recognition for translating text and images it does automatic image detection it does image
translation overlays that prefers preserves original formatting and it supports multiple language
pairs no internet is required for translations once the models are downloaded all translations happen
locally both of these applications are available the source code is available both of them are under the gpl
v3 license with the offline translator for android being version three or later that's it invaluable little tools
if you respect privacy and need to translate from one language to another super handy to have in your toolbox
