Hello, this is archer 72 for hacker public radio.
In this episode, I would like to leave myself a reminder of how to fix a problem I had
before I had upgraded an NVMe drive and then I hadn't used MKV in a while, so I had to look
up the solution again.
I'm using version 1.18.2 as of this podcast.
Before coming to the conclusion that I did, I did a couple of troubleshooting steps.
One was to try a different drive, which was a much-eated drive, it was a pretty common drive
that you can get on eBay for about $20, and it did work with a Blu-ray without hanging
up the problem I ran into was a set of Blu-ray drive from HP, where it would start looking
like it was loading the disk and just hung there and stalled.
I read a couple of forums, and I checked the, what I thought was the fault disk with handbrake
and it read it just fine, and then I also checked to see if there was enough power and there
was because I was using it an adapter to provide 12 volts.
As of this recording on January 22nd, 2026, I needed to revert to version 1.17.7 to successfully
rip an MKV, because that was the one where it finally loaded up, and I will leave links in the
show notes of where I, in which form I found this information about the older release,
and also the repo where I would find it, and then links to the very specific ones of
1.17.7, the specific two files that need to be installed to make this work.
To install this version, you will have to go into the MKV-OSS directory and perform a dot slash
configure first, and then a make, and then a pseudo-making stall, and then go back into
the previous directory and go to make MKV-bin, and then perform make, and then pseudo-making stall,
and then the program will function as expected. I hope this tip helps somebody else to
and if you're interested in what I am recording this on, it is a Zoom H1 essential,
and I'm monitoring the recording with a sound core, open air earbud.
